Dyckia sp - Agudos do Sul - PR

This plant here did not flowered yet and until that happens
some changes in it make up may occur.
I also think this individual here were somewhat shadowed.
It is one rain dragged plant that fell down from the high cliff.

This plant seems to be a brand new species from the South.
It comes from Southeastern Paraná. Paraná is also the home of Dyckia fosteriana, a well known majesty.
I just know young adult plants and never saw one at blooming.
I was told this plant produces red small flowers in slender flower spike.
It is a rock dweller plant and no green form was seem up to now.
This plant gets much redder and silver than this, resulting in a beautiful new addiction to any collection.

Dyckia goehringii

Dyckia goehringii also have some masks.
Many Dyckias have some and some have lots of masks.
This creates a pandemonium in taxonomic efforts to classify some Dyckias.
Dyckias are easily mistaken by scientisits, taxonomists and Dyckia lovers.
Dyckias do not make it easy to taxonomists who avoid Dyckias in order not to commit more mistakes. Science more than one time concluded it described a phantom or a gnu for a zebra. So reason says caution here. Classify a Dyckia takes time and time means years and years in a roll.
Dyckias ought to be cultivated during years before being described and even so care must be taken.
All about Dyckias will be corrected when Science believe in itself and use
DNA examination to reveal who is who and then many, many whoes will be revealed.

You must look straight otherwise you won´t see it.
Maybe the plant thinks to be too delicious to be conspicuous.
This is a true species!!!
The flower spike is slender and thin. This characteristic common to some Cerrado species.

This one down below is a remarkable Dyckia goehringii individual.
In sunny dry days it gets totally whitish like bare bones.

A luxury Dyckia sp from South west Goiás

Silvery plants always catches my eyes.
They seem to come from Mars.
This is a dreamed Dream Dyckia species.
Once I thought it would be a hybrid made up there in Central Brazil.

Dyckia sp from Goiás

Dyckias always makes us dream, dream of beauty..

Dyckia reitzii

Dyckia reitzii

Dyckia reitzii may be silver, green or red.
It grows on rocks ever high up on the mountains.
It may be called Snow Dyckia ´cause everywhere it grows in nature
there are snowy days in deep winter.
Snow in Brazil is absolutely odd, rare and it happens
occasionally atop the highest Southern mountains.
There is the habitat of this beauty.
Its flowers re superb.

Have you ever dreamed of a place far way from it all?

One doesn´t have to climb that rocky mountain to
reach the Dream Dyckia

You may do your very yours mountain.
All fit in a shallow pottery basin.
Could it be prettier?

Dyckia noelii

Dyckia noelli

The name is not valid yet. The species is astonishing beautiful.
The center of the rosette is well silvered.
The upper side leaf is deep red/chestnut colored.
The underside is old copper patina and
Leaves bears teeth that are very far apart from each other.

Native to Northeastern Santa Catarina

There is also an olive green form.

Dyckia sp - Lagoão-RS

This is a very beautiful undescribed species.
Conspicuous red spines and the silvery underside makes a fine contrast to the red tinged upper leaf surface.

Dyckia pectinata

Dyckia pectinata
(pectinata = like a comb)

Dyckia burle-marxii

Dyckia burle-marxii

Rare, strong, beautiful and well armed.

Dyckia delicata - some of them under the stars

Dyckia delicata by night...

...or under the stars.

These are ll young plants they get bigger...

Dyckia delicata

Dyckia delicata silver form
This is a true species!!!

This breath taking beautiful South Brazil native plant is a queen of all queens.
This silver form is particularly astonishing. Dyckia delicata may be red, silver, yellowish/olive.
This is me preferred one.
Look its seedlings, how plenty.
The flower spike is strong but produces small yellow flowers and the seeds are very small.
In cultivation Dyckia delicata produces flower but their seeds are usually useless.
Dyckia delicatas needs two Delicatas of different parents to produce viable seeds.
I hope something even prettier coming out from this plastic box.

Dyckia lindelvaldeae

Dyckia lindelvaldeae

Here it is producing six flower spikes.
The flowers are intense yellow/orange petaled and disgusting
smelling. Some botanists relate very pleasantly aromatic flowers but
this one is the opposite. It stinks badly.
Also this plant is not self fertile. Its slender flower spikes produce bad smelling not self fertile flowers. For one to get seeds there must be two non cloned distint plants flowering at the same time. Casually that´s what we have here this time. so we hope to have true seeds.
The plant is small sized and absolutely gorgeous.

Dyckia ibiramensis

Ibirama is an enchanting small German like town in the hearts of Santa Catarina.
It is a breath taking beautiful place. Two mighty rivers cross the city showing it white waters
running nervously among sharped stones.
This species grows in a single river bank almost downtown.
We cultivated this species since long ago. My mother was born in Ibirama .
There we have two magnificent reofitic species, Dyckia brevifolia and this one Dyckiaibiramensis.
Both produces conspicuous yellow flowers.

Dyckia ibiramensis

Dyckia cabrerae red form

Dyckia cabrerae red form

Native to the west of Santa Catarina this species is rare and hard to keep as it is prune
to fungus attack. It is used to cold winters wit h many nights of freezing cold temperatures.
It a a ribbon leaved species. This is the even rarer red form.
This baby is 400 kilometres East from it native quarters and never bloomed here.
Something is missed in its cultivation. May the different altitude here we are sea leveled and in the West it was 900 m high.
It produces conspicuous orange flowers in a slightly branched flower spike.

Dyckia sp Bateias de Baixo - Santa Catarina

Bateias de Baixo is a very small village in Northeastern Santa Catarina State in Brazil.
There uphills beautiful small week end leisure farms turn the place a kind of tropical Shan-gri-la of the novel Lost Horizon of James Hilton.
(There is a movie picture, 1973, and the songs are Burt Bacharach.
It is worth to see it or better yet read the book.)
In winter the weather may be very cold for Brazilian patterns and even occasional snow may be seen very once in a while.
This plant is extremely rare and lives well guarded deep into one leisure farm.
The plant is medium sized and pinkish red leaved.
A show plant, a dream Dickia no doubt.
This one came out from Shan-gri-la without getting old and turning into ashes, like in the novel.

Dyckia pumila

Dyckia pumila

Pumila is Latin for dwarf or small.
This small baby is native to Mato Grosso.
It is a colorful plant special for small stone gardens.
Does a very good job when under lack of water stress. It gets silver and red.
this plant lives in a place with well distinguished dry season.

Dyckia sp from Northeastern Santa Catarina

This is the most silvery Dyckia species form Santa Catarina up to now.
In fact this graceful plant has the color of the lead covered all over with a heavy silver dust
and the leaves underside are totally silver.
It is a very attractive Dyckia.
A real regal new breeze in the Dyckia World.

Its flowers are equally impressive being big and orange in a strong uprighted
non branched flower spike.
