This Dyckia is native to top of a mountain in Joinville.
To get there you have to have be at a pristine shape to face a 12 hour climbing
or rich enough to pay for a chopper.
No matter the way you choose you must be a bit crazy anyway.
The plant looks like Dyckia gloriosa green but this is smaller, has narrower
leaves and bears red smaller flowers.
This is a mountain in Joinville Northeasthern Santa Catarina.
This picture was taken today, Sunday August, 23rd, 2009. It was a cloudy day.
There are Dyckias living on the top of it.
All this mountain is an immense monolithic block of granite.
It is covered by a luxuriant tropical rain forest.
There is no way to the top and we have to follow a good and experienced bushman.
We have to carry everything to camp up there ´cause it takes almost a day to get there.
We walk amid a luxuriant forest. We have to carry all the gear on our own back.
Dyckias are there. There is the home of a wonderful Dyckia sp
I took two small young plants, no more. I simply could not get down carrying an once more.
It was one year ago and today I think I would never get there without a chopper.
The plant has beautiful red flowers and narrow leaves.
The last meters, the top of the mountain is almost pure bare rock. The plant lives there.
It is a windy and also humid place but when the Sun gets there it turns into a very dry spot.
Plant relies on dew and fog besides rain to maintain the substrate humid.
We do not find such Dyckia in any nursery but if it would be possible
no price would be fair enough.
Just enthusiasts and crazy guys would dare to climb that mountain.
Also as we say here: you need courage (guts) and the health of a bull.
