That´s what Dyckias are for!

Dyckias is for bringing joy and pleasure through the eyes to our hearts.
Just happy plants can do this. Suffering miserable looking plants won´t
do it for sure. Our brains seem to know the healthy and the ill ones. It may be part of the human surving. Those who dindn´t know which material was safe and good for eating perished along the way of evolution. Dyckias are living creatures and good forks. They are always feeding as a priest as we say.
Eager feeders, in nature they make and remake their substrate continuously.
Fresh nutrients are brought to their feet in a constant array. Decaying organic
material is collected by the lower Dyckia leaves and once trapped there they begin to
decompose and liberate its nutritional components to the Dyckia. Death leaves from the vegetation above ( Dyckias attache to rocks in a mouintain are never the upmost vegetation. They are close to the mountain top, but just close.)l, death fungi, algae, dust, corpses of a myriad of small animals and insects and worms make part of a Dyckia menu. Their buffet is rich, nutritious and varied.
All this material are brought by wind and water (rain, dew) to the Dyckia dish constantly.
We must know this in order to keep healthy happy plants.

A young Dyckia plant in a small black plastic pot is prone to suffer from malnutrition
at the end of its very first summer no matter what you have added to the substrate.
Chemicals are all fussy and brief left aside dangerous to the plant, the environment and your pets, your family and yourself. Those slow releasers fertilizer are perfect in controlled environment. Under the Sun those black plastic pots literally boil its contents.
Here I managed to produce 76 degrees Centigrade in a small black plastic pot. Observe I live 500km down the Capricorn line which passes over the City of São Paulo. Now imagine those living close to the equatorial zone... They fry they plants! Dyckias are Sun lovers extreme Sun lovers. Also those slow releasers fertilizers free its contents at once as they are subjected
to temperatures above 60 degrees Centigrade and plenty of humidity. the roots that is not boiled nor fried is now burned by the over amount of fertilizer.
Try to walk the nature way this is always a wise choice.
Look at the pictures above. Click on them and see that dust like material on the cover of the substrate.
Santa Catarina is since long ago the world largest producer of chicken.
Chicken here is almost priceless. One clean and ready pail chicken costs half the price of a shot gun charge. Wild bird invade the cities, come to nest in our backyards. Of course education, knowing, law all made its part in conservation but money ans practicality counts too.
Chicken are raised in huge aviaries and they grow on a layer of sawdust. In 33 days the chicken are sent to the slaughterhouse and their bed removed and renewed. This old chicken bed is very rich in Nitrogen and many other nutrients. I sprinkle a bit of it on every Dyckia pot. You can hear the fork being lifted. Of course use it parsimoniously as all even plain water must be used wisely. This is walk through a more natural way and you will be helping every thing and everyone around you.
Ah, this material is not pleasantly scented of coursely. If you can stand it remember
you have a fantastic choise: China is making fake plastic Dyckias. They are always at bloom
are scented and the only concern is the dust removal once in a while.
They also come in a version with fake dew droplets.
Also always cheap. Ah, they fade their color and dismantle in the Sun but
you substitute them in a blink of an eye.
