Dyckia dawsonii cultivar
After its description this species was not just a single time found in nature.
It was searched and searched and searched up to exhaustion to no avail.
Isn´t it another case just like that of Dyckia platyphylla?
We all can do Dyckia platyphylla at home!! Use a Dyckia marnier lapostollei as the mother plant and a Dyckia brevifolia as the pollen donor.  You will have your own platyphylla, a home made one.
Platyphylla was never found in nature after its description and  most probably never before too. Once was said to drive in nature in Bahia then in Rio Grande do Sul. Those places are many thousands kilometers apart.
Dyckia argentea was so badly described the name is invalid! It was said to drive in Mexico!!!
Those times Tropics were a place for refugees and  forgotten by God people. No one would ever imagine the vast Mato Grosso would harbour megalopolis a few years ahead. Paved roads, airports and trains come and go hourly to where just intrepid guy on muleback would dare to go. No one counted on Internet when a simple telephone call from Brazil to Germany would take ages to accomplish with the help of an operator and more noise that words. Telegraph was the main method of communication and it existed only where the train could go. Latin was never understood and and most descriptor relied on taking full sentences already used by others, without any ability with this "dead" language. Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French are Latin as it would be spoken today. German and English speakers hardly know of Latin...Middle ages are long gone in Europe where Latin was all spread there.
Most of the botanists would never even wonder how Latin would sound to their ears less yet write it perfectly as would Julius Cesar or Lucretia Borgia. These scientists relied on tablets.
Here our Pe. Raulino Raitz was a Botanist and a master on Latin besides being a Catholic Father. So his plant descriptions are well different as he could Latin speak if needed.
Fact is..we use to take people in Botany as gods who never would dare to fail nor fake on purpose. They are and were not any God and committed many, many barbarisms themselves...
many descriptions point out a place with intentioned errors as people would go to such places and devastate the area, most of the time their own collegues. Those guys are notable among orchid lovers of the last century. They travelled the tropics in search of fame and money as they said in Brazil gold was found perching on tree branches (...our orchids and our birds). Most famous European Botanic Gardens relied on those intrepid souls to supply them with tropics novelties and one would never know what was left here....Collector would take all the representants of a single species and if they were a lot they would burn or dump the plants into the rivers to avoid the next European  gentleman from taking a single plant themselves....It was business, a black terrible one. Tropics were a land of no one! This nightmare happened with orchids and  also with our cacti but already less bad but even so extremely stupid. It happened in less rigor and perfection with our bromeliads and  some of that bad habits are also seen with our Dyckias up to now.
