Dyckias are not alone in nature.
Lichen, algeae, mosses, grasses, fungi and more all make part of their living.
All these other companions die sooner or later. The leftovers are used as substrate components.
They die when the drough is long and intense or in this case here the frequent frozes in the winter leave just the beautiful Dyckia alive.
Here they stand 10 degrees Centigrades below freezing. In the mornings when the froze accurs the temperature doesn´t stay below freezinf for later than 8 in the morning as the Sun rises the temperature gets to a more acceptable condition.
Here we do not have negative temperatures for longer than a few brief hours.
