Dyckia brevifolia, a Santa Catarina native

Dyckia brevifolia grows on rocks in the Itajaí River System.
During flood times it remains submerged for weeks. It is prepared for the flood times and knows how to cope with that.
Its spot in the river is always a sunny one and the plant adheres to the rocks by intruding their roots into stone crevices. All the substrate it needs comes from the river water. Fragments of plants are brought to the Dyckia brevifolia by the water when the river water level goes up.
The plant occurs from Rio do sul where I was born to Blumenau 100km down the river.

Dyckia brevifolia is a reofitic Dyckia.
This means the plant grows close to running waters.
This does not mean the plant is aquatic as a water lilly or an Elodea. It is a rock dweller!

The snake and the gnome are fakes...or have you seen a gnome?
Well, Dyckia brevifolia is not that small after all.

Ups! Look, Astrogildus Hepatoglossus, the big nosed gnome is here....
