What a Dyckia complex is?
Dyckia complex ( There are just three dyckia complex on Earth.) is a region where some Dyckia species, three or more, live close to one another and this proximity allows the formation of some natural hybrids. So all the plants of this region show some shared particularities, hint of the same ancestries. These ancestries may be vanished from the area ages ago. Now their looks are spread in a vast population of individuals completely different from the ancient plants.
There is one of this region in Rio Grande do Sul and it is known as The Gaucho Dyckia Triangle. Dyckia hebdingii comes from there. There is another one in Minas Gerais. The less studied one is this one in Northeastern Santa Catarina and also the most complex Dyckia complex!
Dyckia noelii
Dyckia noelii honors the woman who saw this beauty by the fist time ever and realized it was new. In nature plants may be in so critical and bad situation they barely resembles a plant.
This plant was covered by pine needles. This pine is an intruder from North America. Just a few centimeters of the leaves could be seen. The plant was dying suffocated by the fallen pine needles.
Note the long distance between the spines and also the more silvered region in the center of the crown. Isn´t it a show? The color is absolutely a permanent one and it is not a consequence of any stress like dryness or scorching sun. So this is a rubra form a stable color. Yes, it does exist! There is one green form. It is a group of plant growing literally on a brink of a abyss and a too much too dangerous place for anyone without the proper safe devices to stay for more than a few seconds.
Here you see the under leaves . This patina silver color is produced by the thrichomas and the plant uses this to reflect the sun rays. It does do uplifting the leaves and protecting the growing region from the intense heat.
In nature every particularity has a reason to exist. Nature do nothing for free or for nothing.
It i up to us to know the very reason it it is so crucial to know.
