Why spines, and so many on a Dyckia?

Spines are for protection indeed but probably it is not what you may be thinking now.
Dyckia leaves are juicy and animals do feed on them spiny or not.
Capybara, agoutis and other rodents just relish on the juicy Dyckias specially during drought periods.
The spines do not prevent these animals from getting their teeth on a succulent Dyckia.
This plants here, Dyckia delicata, have soft rubbery like teeth.

Spines are mainly heat ratiators. They dissipate heat!
They are part of the Dyckia air conditioning system.

Also Their spines add to their allure.
Remove the Spines of a Dyckia and get it graceless.
A Dyckia on the nude (spineless) is not any appealing.
A spineless Dyckia is a graceless plant.
