Apiúna is a small town close to the Itajaí-açu River in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Apiúna is a word from Tupy a native indigenous people and it means painted in black.
This plant was found on Morro Dom Bosco ( Dom Bosco Hill, in fact, a huge granite monolith.) downtown the small town
Dyckia apiunensis was described by Dr. Pierre Braun and me as assistant and co-author.
A giant honor to me.
From the very same area, The Itajaí-açu River Valley, we have:
Dyckia ibiramensis, Dyckia vilsonii, Dyckia gastaldiana, Dyckia brevifolia.
