Curiosities on Dyckia behavior.... delicatas love steep terrain
In nature, delicatas are found in very very steep rocky terrain and always facing The Equatorian Line, facing the Sun their master. They love their home and they are more than well adapted to it.
Their crowns are big, flat, and VERTICAL. They are never found on flat plain terrain. They love 90°walls. This the reason when you keep it in a pot like a carrot it lays down flattening half oof the crown on the ground and getting a less pleasant look.
If you want a perfect delicata crown, give it a change of behaving as at home, keep it at 90°!!
Delicatas hate small little plastic pots. Their pots must be at least 50cm tall, this is half a meter high. Cut a piece of the border and keep the V-shaped bite directed to the Equatorian line. Plant your delicata close to the border and the V bite on the border. when the plant has laid down use a big heavy rock on top of the vase (do not cover it completely and to not put it on the border of the vase. This rock serves to several purposes as keeping humidity and avoid falls, accidental ones, or caused by wins, are some of them. The rock provides stability to your tall vase.
If you do not allow your delicatas to assume a 90° position you will never have a perfect giant big crown, an impressive one. If you plant it as carrot you will have a folded crown for the delicata planta will always try to get a vertical position.
nature always has an explanation, a reason to be. Nothing is senseless or for nothing.
Observe, observe, and observe and you will find out those reasons.
Another observation is: the flower stalks emitting site is always the dorsal one, the one on top of the plant as you can see on he pictures above.
