I just got two extremely impressive rubra plants in my collection, the encholirioides and the ibiramensis. Her I show you the only known Dyckia encholirioides rubra up to now all over the world. Almost all Dyckia species present the rubra form, some are only known for their rubra forms and some never show up to human eyes its rubra ones. These are the cases of encholirioides and ibiramensis. They presented both one single rubra plant amid thousands of seedlings here in my garden....in nature this would be impossible to happen as it is almost impossible for a normal looking one to appear. Dyckia seedlings in nature are always hard to see.

Fat and heavy and each one a treasure.....

Note the seeds have no wing or are wingless, they are just fat.

This is typical in dyckias the thrive on vertical slopes.

They do not wings to fly but be heavy to fall.

Being heavy the seeds are capable of sprouting bellow.

Dyckia delicata type is the lowest on the slope in nature and the golden one ( no seeds now ) is the highest in the vertical slope in nature.

We need to observe much more and study deeply this marvel plants in nature.

Dyckias! They make it possible to dream and make our own masterpieces.

One needs to get away from the old classics to try something new.

...and something new is what we have by the plenty in Brazilian wilderness.

We have all sort of rough material to make real all dreamers fantasies.

Our garden needs the beautiful not the wild only, this is the job of the Botanic Gardens and of course the preserving areas in wilderness. Preserving the species is not our job ´cause once a plant gets out from the wilderness it gets itself into a dubious plant and will never, never get back to wilderness. Our botany has committed all errors and mistakes with Dyckias up to the point of deserving no trusting. Science described hybrids as species, put a plant native to Brazil in Mexico, described twice and differently the very same thing.

Dyckias are alluring and alluding. They are not plants to be described based on a glimpse, a furtive look in wilderness and based on the stories of a bushman a professional on assaulting our wilderness. Dyckias as long taken as stray plants..people were looking for cacti and other bromeliads and then spotted a Dyckia...Dyckias rarely was any´s intention. Egos are larger than most of their owners and botany presented all sort of them.

So when people ask me is it pure? It makes me laugh and cry at the very same time...and makes me say:

it is pure Dyckia!!!

Commercially things are even worst than in the science field as Dyckias are a total different being. they do not act as orchids or cacti and one must think differently on them.

Taking Dyckias seriously is a job for those who are willing to dare to face the new...

What is safe and sure to be said on Dyckias?

This is beautiful this is not!

... but we must not give up!

I love Dyckias, they are sublime and fantastic and they have many habilities and the one I love the most is the easiness they fool us all lovers, scientists, traders and whatsoever...they really defies me as they represent a challenge to any one who dares to take them seriously ...

Some of the most notorious Brazilian scientists were helped in their researches by the Government scientific support organs so they strategically used to find one or two new plants every year in order to guarantee the flow of money intake. They would have always many cards within their many gloves,just in case...and we all lost.

No, this is not a Dyckia brevifolia!

This is anew found reofitic species from the High Itajaí-açu River Valley.

I was born close by in Rio do Sul - Santa Catarina in August 1954.

This is a very very interesting plant as it keeps many of the brevifolia characteristics and some of the distachya too. Notice the way it reproduces by stoloms....

This is a plant I would love to describe as I found it myself in Albertina by the Albertina creek, and affluent of Rio Itajaí do Sul. Itajaí do Sul and Itajaí do Norte rivers meet downtown Rio do Sul to make the mighty Itajaí-açu River.

This well may be Dyckia constantinoi....but I think a better name will be found.

If a Dyckia would be cultivated for its flowers this would be it.

Thousands of tiny yellow flowers and displayed in such a lovely way no eyes miss to see it and also no nose fail to sent their lovely and impressing perfume....it is everywhere in the garden.

These fantastic Dyckias grows only up North in Rio Grande do Sul and South in Santa Catarina.

Here Dyckias may flower so....spectacularly!.

This plant here belongs to an unknown Dyckia species.

Next March I am bound to these boundaries and we all will see them in wilderness.

Up to this very day I did not see any Dyckia goehring picture From outside Brazil.

What I saw are hybrids, pretty ones but not Dyckia goehringii.

They all show a Chanel wig like structure that is peculiar to all goehringii hybrids.

The true one never "wigs" and all this supposed to be are pale imitators when compared to the true one goheringii.The fake Dyckia goehring appeared in North America apparently from seeds collected in a Dyckia garden in São Paulo and from there it spread to Southeast Asia, Australia, Japan, Europe.

This is common when a plant is too rare and almost impossible to get. all of a sudden it appears by the hundreds as a miracle. Open up your eyes and compare with all the many goehringii pictures I showed here so often. True Dyckia goheringii flowers are very similar to those of Dyckia estevessi and the flowers do not open fully to avoid dessication of their reproductive organs as these plants live in very xeric and hot ambient.

Flowers are pollinated during the night when it is very warm and the pollinating agents ate mops. Flowers do not even pollinate if it is not warm enough and we so not try it during the eve. So seed pods collected in Dyckia gardens are almost always contains hybridized seeds as people do not wakes up in the middle of the night to try to pollinate Dyckia flowers that were isolated before.

Science credits wilderness glimpses bush men and intrepid guys experience in our Brazilian almost endless fields.....glimpses are not enough.

Dyckias have for long alluded and fooled those once in a lifetime intrepid excursionists in Brazilian wilderness.

Science needs to take Dyckias more seriously to get the credit it expects to have from Dyckia lovers.

It is much too easy and weird to come to the new world tropics from a far away lands and follow a bush man that wandered the wilderness (much more interested in other plants as cacti ....as Dyckias are historically side findings.) spot a new Dyckia, take some shots and plants and that is ready and done...this won´t work on Dyckias!!
I here do not talk about the men but about their work.
Dyckias are not a matter of finding it and describe it...No way!!!
They must be taken more seriously and not just a side finding. One must visit it at home many times and during different seasons and cultivate the plant as much similarly as possible to the climate it is used too.

We simply can´t find out a Dyckia today and describe it tomorrow as it were a new grass or a new carrot.

Science is based on observations!!! This is pretty basic!!!

Dyckia argentea was described as being Mexican as well as Sinningia richii.

The name Dyckia argentea is not valid any more due to this undeniable grotesque confusion.. It seems the European guys got too many plants at once and they got confused not to say dizzy.

Dyckia platyphylla never existed in wilderness as it is a cultivar, a hybrid made from Dyckia marnier-lapostollei and Dyckia brevifolia.

Dyckia naming have being used to flatter and adulate some Brazilian bush men up to a point that what was left to be used as a Dyckia name in those families were the bush man´s dog or his parakeet...that is butter up the fool or in Portuguese, "puxar o saco" to grantee a continuous flow of wilderness information and plants to fill in the arrogance and the nothing lef to be done of a complete strange to us! So all that came from this fountain is absolutely suspicious no matter correct or not.
No wonder that is so up today as not long ago new plants were only described in Europe. Famous Botanic Gardens destroyed here in Santa Catarina our native populations of Laelia purpurata. Tons of them were send to these BG only to die during the sea journey or within badly equipped warmed up rooms (they used charcoal). Recently our beautiful cactus Uebelmania pectinifera was devastated in nature up to the point we can never find big ones anymore as all of them were removed from nature (from places a goat has to be very skilled to reach) in an attempt to promote the elevation of its price in international trade. In two collections one here in Brazil and one in Europe we see where those adult bicentennial cacti are.

Botany must be serious to be taken as that...

Here I say it over what my mother, (born in 1912), used to say: "paper accepts anything, even asses..."
